Memory Foam - technical name, Visco Elastic - was originally developed to support astronauts in the NASA Space Programme to reduce the effects of G-Forces during space flight. The material cushioned the impact of all the forces involved and gave the astronauts effective protection during long stays aboard their craft.
Memory Foam was not released into the open market at once after its success in space, but news of its remarkable properties soon reached the medical community and it found its way into leading hospitals where doctors and surgeons were quick to appreciate the benefits it afforded their patients in post-surgery recovery and long-term care.
Since then, Memory Foam has been developed for various commercial uses, and has been endorsed by many medical institutions, osteopaths and physiotherapists for its unique pressure relief properties, which assist and improve circulation as well as reducing the risk of pressure sores.
Foam converters, who made Memory Foam products for hospitals, soon realised how beneficial this new material (Visco-Elastic) would be for the general public and began introducing their products into the mainstream domestic bed and mattress market. It didn't take long for people who were searching for truly comfortable beds and mattresses to appreciate the extra benefits to be gained from sleeping on Memory Foam.
Memory Foam distributes body-weight more evenly than any traditional mattress, reducing the pressure build-up that can lead to neck, back and joint discomfort during sleep.
Memory Foam is hypo allergenic, anti microbial, anti bacterial, affords pressure relief, is temperature sensitive, silent in use and - uniquely - conforms to the exact shape of the sleeper's body.
Memory Foam helps relieve discomfort for people who suffer from back problems, aching joints, sciatic pain, arthritis, rheumatism, circulatory problems and neck pain.
Because there is no pressure on the body, when you sleep on a Memory Foam mattress you feel as if you are almost floating on air. This sensation is known as the dynamic floatation effect.
For everybody - even people without any medical problems at all - sleeping on a Memory Foam mattress is a rejuvanating experience, simply because there is so little pressure on the body. You will not toss and turn, you will achieve much deeper sleep - and you will wake up feeling more refreshed than ever before.
Of course, with so many manufacturers involved today, all Memory Foam mattresses are not the same.
Now that Memory Foam is an established product in the domestic bed market, it is available in different grades. These grades are known as foam densities. Although, as a rule of thumb, the higher the foam density the better quality the foam is, in the case of Memory Foam this is not always true. The foam is a polymer structure - tiny air bubbles - and if the foam density is too high, these tiny bubbles are soon constricted and become so small that the Memory Foam does not 'breathe' and becomes warmer and less comfortable.
We have found that Memory Foam with a density between 40 and 60kg performs best in keeping the mattress cool. We also recommend Memory Foam mattresses with airflow channels built into the foam, achieved by manufacturing convoluted channels into the visco-elastic that help the mattress to 'breathe'.
Over the past few years, we have worked with the top Memory Foam technicians in the UK to develop our range of quality Memory Foam beds, mattresses and pillows.
All our Memory Foam products are made to the highest quality standards. We are confident that you will not buy a better Memory Foam mattress anywhere.
